What are they and what are they used for?

It is a garment to protect your clothes from spilled milk. It can be placed over the shoulder while burping your baby. You can also use it to cover your baby and yourself while breastfeeding.

What to look for when choosing the best burp cloths.

When buying them there are a few things to look for to make sure you buy the best ones.

Shape – The burp cloth should be in the shape of an hourglass. This way it will fit over your shoulder while covering your front and back from any spit ups.

Size – It’s preferred to have a larger size so it covers more of your clothing. It will also offer more privacy when breastfeeding your baby. The measurement of ours is 45cm from tip to tip and 22cm at its widest part.

Materials – When selecting a burp cloth be sure to inspect the materials used. They should have at least two layers and should be made from an absorbent material. We go into further details later in the post on what materials are the best.

Style – Choose a colour or pattern to suit your style. Most baby shops will have a large selection of prints to choose from.

Layers – Look for a style that has two layers of material. Cloths that are one layer tend to be of lesser quality and not as absorbent.

What is the difference between a washcloth and a burp cloth?

There are many differences between the two. The main being the size. Washcloths are considerably smaller than burping cloths. Also, the burp cloth has many layers. But, we do use the same bamboo material to make both these products.

Are burp cloths the same as bibs?

No, they are not. Bibs are designed to be placed around the baby’s neck to capture drool. While burp cloths are for keeping your clothes clean when feeding a newborn. 

Do hospitals give you any?

No, In Australia hospitals don’t give you burp cloths. So we would suggest you put a couple in your hospital bag.

There are a variety of sizes and styles of burp cloths made by many different manufacturers. Here we touch on what is the best material to make your own.

What fabric is best to use?

When choosing materials we suggest using a bamboo cotton mix for the back and cotton for the front. The bamboo is absorbent and soft for cleaning up spit on the baby’s face.

What materials can be used for burp cloths

There are many different types of materials that can be used. These include cotton, bamboo or terry towelling.

Are burp cloths necessary?

No, they are not an essential item. Although they are nice to have if you have the budget for it.

What can I use instead of burp cloths?

If you want to keep your shopping list to a minimum there are other items you can use instead of burp cloths. The most popular choices are towels cloth nappies. These are both absorbent and soft on the baby’s skin. 

Can you use cloth diapers as burp cloths?

Yes, you can use diapers as a replacement. Nappies are designed to absorb liquids so they will do a good job. The Gerber brand is recommended.

If you have a newborn that is subject to reflux you will need a lot. If your baby doesn’t spit up much you won’t need many. Start off by buying 2 good quality cloths and get more if needed.

Do you need burp cloths if you have bibs?

Yes, it is better to buy bibs and burp cloths separately. Bibs and burp cloths are two different products designed for two different applications. In general, bibs are designed for protecting the baby and their clothes. While burping cloths are for protecting the parents’ outfit. How many bibs and burp cloths do I need?

As these aren’t interchangeable start by buying 4 bibs and 2 burp cloths. There are many types of bibs available so start with 2 newborn styles and 2 bandana styles.

It is important to care for all your baby’s clothes and products. Make sure you read the labels to ensure you care for each product.

Washing, drying and ironing instructions 

Each manufacturer will have different requirements for washing and drying their product. This will depend on the materials they use. We make our product with cotton and bamboo. For best results wash in warm water at 40 degrees. They can be dried using a machine dryer. The front can be ironed using a cool iron.

How do you store bibs and burp cloths? 

Both of these can be stored with your other baby clothes. They can be stored in draws or under a changing table.

Where do you put burp cloths in the nursery?

Burp cloths can be stored anywhere in your nursery. The most popular places to store them are at your feeding station. They can also be stored in draws and near changing tables.

How often should you change your burp cloth?

You should change your burp cloth daily. They can be easily washed and dried along with other baby accessories of the same colour.

These are one of the most straightforward baby products to use. 

To use a burp cloth place it over your shoulder. The thin bit should be on your shoulder blade. While the larger sides protect the front and back of your clothing. This article will help you learn how to burp a baby.

If you are using it to cover yourself while feeding. Drape the cloth over your breast. Make sure the cloth isn’t resting on the baby’s face and make sure the baby has plenty of room to breathe.

You will use this product for at least the first 6 months and most likely longer. But after using it for burping there are other things you can do with them. You can use them as a washcloth or even wash your car.
